In Albanian culture, bread is far more than sustenance; it is a sacred symbol of hospitality, respect, and connection. The act of preparing and offering bread to a guest is a gesture of honour, embodying the Albanian maxim: “The guest must be honoured: bread, salt, and the heart.” This tradition reflects the enduring values of generosity, community, and the sacred bond between host and guest, making the preparation of bread a powerful and emotional centerpiece in the film’s narrative.

The people interviewed were raised in Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania, where they witnessed their parents and neighbours make significant sacrifices and take considerable risks to help Jews escape the Nazis.
